Local Food is a Win-Win for Marathon County

With a proud heritage of agriculture, local food contributes to our economy and our health. Farmers’ markets are a place for people to purchase locally grown produce as well as connect with their community. Marathon County has 11 active farmers’ markets May through October. Residents and visitors can access a farmers market all year long. Monday is the only day Marathon County does not have a farmers’ market, and Saturday is when the Winter Market is offered November through April. All of the markets in Marathon County are unique in what they have to offer; there are organic and nonorganic produce, meats, eggs, baked goods, flowers, herbs and so much more.

The Village of Weston Farmers Market and Wausau Summer Farmers Market will offer debit card and EBT (Food Share) access for customers again this summer season. It is best practice to offer EBT at the farmers’ markets as it increases access to healthy, local foods. Out of the 287 farmers’ markets in Wisconsin, 68 markets accept EBT. EBT at farmers’ markets is good for the local economy; over $5,600 in Food Share purchases were redeemed at the Marathon County markets in 2017. Watch for the signage at the markets to purchase EBT tokens and debit tokens.
